#1132 Rt. 89 Whale Tales

All cards blank inside. Include colorful envelope in clear glassine bag.

Facts: The Whale Tails, originally titled ‘Reverence’, are located on Rt. 89 at Industrial Park south of Burlington, VT. They were carved by Randolph, VT resident Jim Sardonis in 1989 from 36 tons of African black granite and originally located in his home town. The artist was simply representing two tails of whales diving into an imaginary sea of grass. They were moved to their present location in 1999. When I’m driving home from a southern road-trip, I call Terry to tell her that I’m at the Whale Tails. People who see my cards tell similar stories…especially kids!

Here’s a true ‘tale’ about whale tails in Vermont. As a mile-high glacier receded to the north 12,500 years ago, the North Sea filled in around it creating the Champlain Sea. While constructing the first railroad between Rutland and Burlington in 1849, workers unearthed the fossilized bones of a “beluga” or “white” whale in Charlotte, VT. The Beluga Whale is an animal that inhabits arctic and subarctic marine waters in the northern hemisphere.
